Just Us Girls #11- Technique

Woohooo! It's saturday with Just Us Girls!  It's also ONLY 13 days until Christmas!  What?!  I just need like 2 more months to do all the things I want to do to create memories for my family and THEN it can be Christmas ;) OK, since the calendar doesn't ask me when Christmas can arrive, I guess I should get back to my post here.  This week is a technique challenge led by the super talented and sweet, Kristin!  She has challenged us to try the chalkboard technique.  Don't know how to do that?  Check out the great tutorial over at SCS: Chalkboard Technique

my project:

OK, now I admit, Kristin stumped me with this one because I don't do a lot of deep rich colors and I had to try a couple of stamps before I got things to my liking.  My tips...choose a solid image to work with for bolder washes of color.  Also, use the lighter of the chalks in your chalk set to really make things pop against your dark background.

I used the evergreen trees from a retired SU set (a wildlife one I can't think of the name), stamped in white pigment ink and chalked with a lime and green combo of chalks on a cotton ball.  Detail cutting the trees from their black background worked best for me because I wanted to mount them on a chunk of vintage bookprint.  Coincidentally, the book print is mounted on a chalkboard technique reject which allows some of my first try to peek out around the edges...from reject to shabby chic!  How about that chunk of lacy trim?  I nabbed that at the local second hand store wednesday and put some right to work!  Loving that!

The glittery edges were done using a quickie glue pen by sakura and clear glitter from Martha Stewert.  I also love this closeup since it really shows all the depth you can add by using two or more different shades of chalk color on your image.

Soooo, what do you think?  Want to try this out?  Before you get started, be sure and visit all of the JUGs girls to be super inspired and then get chalking.  We'd love it if you shared your creaton with us via Mr Linky over on the JUGs blog.  Can't wait to see what you make!

So glad you could stop by today.  Have a great weekend!!

Well, you are doing justice welcoming the holiday in here! It took me a minute to realize where the chalkboard technique was....love seeing it detail cut out like that giving it so much definition. And that lace...sigh. :>

Ahh...sweet Dana. I can always count on you to come up with something ULTRA creative and unique! I soooo love your work ;] How in the world do you turn your "first try" into an exceptionally cool shabby chic card?! I can't do shabby chic when I TRY, much less out of a technique reject...and I definitely had a reject!! Hmmm...maybe I should relook at that reject and see if it can peek out from a cooler version of the technique.

LOVE how you added depth to your trees by using a couple of shades of green and also love how you cut them out so that the black merely peeks out from around your edges. What a nice effect! The glitter also added a nice finishing touch. I so want some vintage book pages...where do you get them? Do you just tear them out of old books or what? Love that look! The lace and your ribbon with the snowflake and button perfectly complement your beautiful shabby chic project! Great find on that lace!! I have to share a quick story...I was at work one day and this lady I work with noticed her slip was peeking out from under her skirt - just barely. So, she ripped the bottom row of black lace from her slip (it's designed to tear rows of lace from it until it gets as short as needed). She tossed it in the trash laughing, and I quickly stopped her and asked if I could have the lace. She thought I had lost my mind but happily let me have it :) Hee hee. Now I just need to find a project to use it on!
