My Time to Create Color Challenge #3

Hi everyone! Back again with a color challenge from Lauren Meader and the My Time to Create design team! This week's color grouping is especially fun for me....that inspo picture is a closeup of my childhood craft/tea/anything table that is set up and my parents' house for my girls now! The way they tell it, snacks and art area always better at this special table. I happen to KNOW they are CORRECT :) What a gem from the 1970's huh?

the challenge:

Create something using this color grouping and post it on the Mr Linky at Lauren's blog. I love all of fun images on this piece as well to inspire us so let your creativity go wild.

my project:

I instantly was drawn to the woodsy theme of many of the images on this inspo picture. Anyone out there remember Woodsy the Owl? Give a hoot, don't pollute guy? Well, here's a great little modern Woodsy from Recollections at Michaels paired with some Target $1 aisle cork letters and fun embossing.

Isn't he just a make you smile kind of owl?

Another thing that has been going on this week with the My Time team is the promotion of a wonderful fundraiser for the Make A Wish foundation of Illinois. Melissa of Pink Cat Studios designed a wonderful digital stamp set in honor of Ethan Weiman. I'd love it if you'd check out the details on her blog and at the time of writing this post, the giving community we blog and craft in has raised over $1400 from the sales of this digi stamp set! Amazing and so wonderful!!

In honor if this set, I made one more card dedicated to Ethan and his journey. Using the challenge colors and a favorite song title....my heroes have always been cowboys...one more salute to a cowboy hero of the little boy kind. Here's to you, Cowboy Ethan!

You definitely don't want to miss what the My Time to Create Team has put together for you this week. Check them out :)

Raspberry Suite Challenge #10 with Ava!

Hi all! Just a quickie post to join in the fun at Dawn McVey's blog for the Raspberry Suite challenge #10! WOW! What fun colors! Just perfect for a cowgirl!! :) This special cowgirl is Ava and she was created strictly to honor a special brother sister pair. All proceeds are being donated to the make a wish foundation of Illinois. See my post from MONDAY and read all about it. :)

The challenge:

My card:Ava is a digital stamp so I printed her out on a piece of transparency and started painting away with acrylic paint! Yes, I said painting...this technique was first introduced to me by the talented and amazing Elise at Mamacow Creations. Check out her recent post {here} with this technique. It's is such a cool effect. It makes your image really pop off the page just like a cartoon. Love it! This shot is to hopefully illustrate the *shine* this technique gives your image. One item of note.....do your painting on the opposite side of the where your inkjet printer printed so your printer ink doesn't smear. Works great with stickles too...check out her shiny belt and earring :)

Thanks so much for stopping by!

Supplies:

Digi image: pink cat studios

Paper: papertrey ink

Ink: Papertrey ink

Punch and embossing plate: SU!

Other: ribbon, transparency, acrylic craft paint, star brad, zig pen and stickles

The Weiman Wranglers are on the loose!

Howdy y'all! It is my pleasure to announce the release of a very special set of digital stamps. At the request of the thoughtful Lauren Meader, the fabulous Melissa at Pink Cat Studios designed this cowboy which honors the memory of little Ethan Weiman who you may have read about here last week who passed away after a courageous battle with cancer beginning when he was a mere 3 years old. This little buckaroo left his mark though and while heaven has gained a sweet child, his memory lives strong here on earth with his family and many friends. Read more of Ethan's story here. Melissa has posted a special digital stamp offer on her blog {here}. All proceeds from the sales of the cowboy Ethan and cowgirl Ava digi stamps will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Illinois at the Weiman family request. Please check it out to see details and also the first projects designed by the My Time to Create Design Team with these adorable images. Visit Melissa's blog through the lnk above to purchase either image with sentiments ($4) or the whole set for $6.

A few design notes on my card.....Most of the image has been paper pieced with cardstock or printed designer paper. I replaced the balloon string with an embroidery floss that resembles rope and also fun flocked Ethan's hat to give him an authentic felt hat look. His trusty steed was paper pieced and the embossed with swiss dots because his shape reminds me of a toy pony and I wanted to give him a playful look. Cowboy Ethan is riding the range of his imagination with a loosely watercolored backdrop using a water brush, SU! inks and cardstock. What wasn't paper pieced was carefully colored with Zig brush markers. These are dye based inks so I had to take care to not smear the lines printed by my inkjet printer. For more on treatments to ink jet printed images to avoid smearing, please see the tutorial I wrote {here}. Also, as I understand it, copics will not smear the ink but I don't have any :( so I can't say for sure. A final touch of silver glitter for a shiny buckle and pant conches and pearl for his shirt front pearl snaps and he was all dressed for the range.

Now for those of you who question whether or not digi stamps are for you I would like to share some tips from my own trial and error sessions in Microsoft Word. I use the 2007 version so if you have a different version some actions might be slightly different but hopefully the tabs are similar enough that these tips will help. I do all of my digital stuff in Word so it just goes to show, that a little bit of tech goes a long way :) Please click to enlarge the pictures for more details. Note: tomorrow, tuesday, Tracey Cuccia (see her link above) will be posting an extensive tutorial about using digital images. Be sure to stop by her blog for more info.
Moving and layering images Once you have downloaded your images, open a new document and Word. (I like to use the grid layout on my page so that is why you see grid squares in the background) Copy and paste your Ethan and Ava images into Word or use the image insert command in Word just as if you were inserting a photograph into your document. Click on the image you want to move around the page. See photo above, I clicked on the "you're amazing" sentiment. Once you click the image, the Format tab appears at the far right of tab options on the top of your document. Click on Format, click on Text Wrapping and then click on In Front of Text. This will allow the image to now move freely about the page.
Click and hold the pointer on the sentiment image and drag it over to the balloon to position it where you want it. Ta da! You've just stamped the balloon!

Paper Piecing with digital images Paper piecing with digital images is a snap! Once you have your image manipulated to the size you want it to be, print it once on plain printer paper and once on white cardstock. Above, the plain paper is on the right and the cardstock on the left. To get a checkered shirt, I adhered a small piece of checkered paper over the shirt area on the plain paper (right above) and printed again on the same plain paper. The shirt was cut out and adhered to the cardstock over the shirt area. Perfect fit! Below is another example using brown scraps for the horse and hat. I embossed the horse after the image was printed. Thanks so much for stopping by today. I hope you'll go visit Melissa's blog today and check out the details for the sweet Ethan and Ava Weiman Wrangler stamps. I can't wait to see what you make with them!!!

My Time to Create Template challenge

Hi all! Happy saturday! It's time for a challenge from Lauren Meader and the My Time to Create Challenge team. Here in the US, tomorrow is Father's Day. I am highlighting a project today that I made for my dad....one super special guy...a hero type you know?? The challenge from Lauren this week is to use one of her Timeless Templates, that you can pick up over at Papertrey Ink, and also to create your own background paper. For my project, I chose the Captured Card Case template. To make my background paper I used a digital kit from Elise Hansen at the Digi Chick What a Catch and stamps from Papertrey Ink. The juicy "I'm so glad that you're my dad" looks like a stamp but is actually a digital element I placed on the background paper as a custom stamp specifically fitting the dimensions of this project. I stamped the lines of stars to complete my simple background with ARound and ABout Sentiments from PTI. The blue star was stamped on white cardstock and paper punched with a fiskars star punch and added to the grouping. Once the template was folded up, I inked the edges with dark chocolate ink frm PTI. A little inking goes a long way don't you think?
A couple strips of cardstock to the edges and that's about all this little box for Dad needs. And what will I fill it with? Typically this box holds a set of A2 size notecards and envelopes but my dad is not much of a notecard writer ;) This year I will fill it with a letter from me, just to let him know how special his is to me and that I'm so glad that he's my dad!
For more inspiration, visit the my time to create DT for lots of amazing template ideas. And then we hope you make something and share it through the Mr Linky on Lauren's blog. Can't wait to see what you make.

What a Catch!

Hey friends! I have a new project to share just in time for last minute father's day inspiration. This is for my hubs who, most of the time, would rather be fishing! ;)
The template and digital papers will be released thursday at the DigiChick in plenty of time for a little something for dad/hubby!

All of my digi work was done in Word and printed out for assembly. I also turned the page orientation to landscape so I could print Kelleigh's template at a larger size and in two pieces. The hooks are actually a single image but I layered them over that juicy grid paper. Same with the "What a catch" sentiment. A little ink and brads from the office desk drawer and we are done!
Thanks for stopping by today!

Weiman Family Fundraiser

This little buckaroo is Ethan Weiman, 4 year old son to My Time to Create Design Team member, Alicia Weiman. Ethan, Alicia and the whole family have been rallying behind Ethan as he has been battling neuroblastoma cancer for 2 years now. Sadly, Ethan passed away this past friday. I can't even begin to explain how sad I feel about this. Learn more at their website, Caringbridge Journal. You can read more about their journey to try and make Ethan well. As Kristen Bueter aptly said, "Sadly, after a long, painful battle, the good Lord called Ethan home."

In an effort to DO something, which is what we all feel when something as unexplainable as this happens, Kristen and Lauren Meader have set up an account in benefit for the family. Please visit either one of their blogs to donate or find out more information.

Thank you for taking the time to read about it here. As a mother of two shining stars myself, I can't imagine the loss their family is feeling now. All I can wish is that they are able to take some comfort from their memories and from the support they receive from near and far.

Raspberry Suite challenge #9

Hey friends! Another Raspberry Suite color challenge from the super duper Dawn McVey! These colors were perfect for a bachelorette card I wanted to make. As luck would have it, the bride's wedding colors are shades of green!

the challenge:

my card:
This cutie is the "mommy"on the cricut new arrival cartridge. She's been hand trimmed and I also made her some long and luscious locks and a wine glass....as the bride has requested a wine country day via limo.
As you can see, I have turned to my old friend, the Swiss Dots embosser. This time I tried double embossing because more of a great thing is better! ;) Also, the sentiment was created using two different sentiment stamps in Dawn's Damask Designs set. Isn't that font gorgeous??
Thanks for stopping by! I truly appreciate that you came for a visit! :)

Supplies:
Cardstock: bazzill

hoot {hello, friend}

Hoot! That's owl for "hello, friends " :) Just a fun little owl card to share today that makes me smile. This card started with the sweet paper pieced owl from Recollections at Michaels and my new fave background stamp, woodgrain from All Night Media. Isn't he cute??
The woodgrain was stamped on dark chocolate cardstock that had previously been punched with the Marvy tree. I stamped the woodgrain twice to fill the cardstock with versamark and then covered it gold embossing powder. I don't use gold much but this combo of gold and chocolate is amazing together! I'll have to remember this.
The sentiment was typed up in Word and printed on a scrap of mustard colored cardstock. Three more scraps provided the space to use them with border punches and layer them on in strips. The addition of chipboard letters to spell Hoot and pearl colored dimensional fabric paint balanced the bright white of Mr Owl's eyes. This owl also came out of the package "sleeping" with eyes closed so a quick fix with some tiny google eyes gave him a wake up call. I wish I could apply that google eye effect to myself in the mornings! ha ha!
Thanks for stopping by today. Have a wonderful Sunday!
Supplies:
Paper: Papertrey Ink and Bazzil

MyTime Inspiration challenge #2

Happy Saturday challenge with the My Time to Create challenge Design Team. This week we have a very fun inspiration challenge meaning anything goes....whatever sparks your imagination in the challenge photo, go for it!

the inspiration:
my project:

I was inspired by several things in this adorable baby room photo. First and foremost the color scheme. I also liked the feeling of home, the animal on the pillow and the circle elements in the room. I have been wanting to do a handmade bird for a while and this card was my chance. This birdie is all me (including the crazy bird feet ;))
Lots of little details on this project. Just the way I like it :) The circle element is layered several times in the bottom layer stamped with the ring of hearts, a foam popped circle that I custom made Word with shaped text to spell out "bless this nest" and then finally, the paper-pieced and colored little house. A little inking to edges to make it stand out.
My hand-stitched bird has what else, but a button eye? I didn't have a mustard colored button BUT, have alcohol ink, will custom color. Thank YOU Tim Holtz *grin*
If this birdie could, she WOULD shake her tail feathers! hee hee! I should note that the paper bird was sewn to the felt layer and then GLUED to the card base with Fabric tac so she could overhang the edges.
Another homey touch is machine STITCHING! I used a not so great hand held machine but I have been having an itch to stitch and recently cleared a corner of my work table that just might make a home for my singer sewing machine. I gotta do more of this!
So I hope my card was a fun treat for you today. Want more?? Check out the peeks from the team below and then visit their links for more ideas from this fun inspiration challenge! Then please SHARE what you made with everyone. KRISTEN is hostessing the challenge this week for Lauren as Lauren is swamped with the Papertrey Ink realease so please head over to Kristen's blog to add your project to the Mr Linky.

Oh Happy Day...a bride's {just in case} kit

Greetings! I have something new and FUN to share today. I recently shared that I was asked by Kelleigh Ratzlaff to be a part of her creative team working with her super cute digital templates. Being the DOLL that she is, she referred lil ol me to Nicole Seitler, who runs the Digi Chick Boutique, and told Nicole "we have to have Dana at the THC". Being the digi know not-so-much that I am, I asked Kelleigh "what is THC?" . Wellllll, THC stands for The Hybrid Chick. It's a brand new arm of the Digi Chick and it's a place especially for those of us who like to use and try digital elements but GOTTA still play with the actual paper, scissors and glue. There are great tutorials at the Hybrid Chick contributed by the creative team as well as contests and giveaways. Guess who is now also a part of the Hybrid Chick team? I know! Can you believe it?! By the way, there is a spot on the sidebar over at THC where you can submit your work for creative team consideration and there is a darling digi paper set to download for FREE also on the sidebar of the site. No excuse not to try it out right? Ch-ch-ch-ch-Check it out!

OK, now on to the project. Oh happy day indeed! I broke open a freshly downloaded digi kit from Mira Designs called Happy Land. It is packed full of fun papers and elements but I have to say the houndstooth paper alone was worth the price of admission for me LOL! I have a small addiction to houndstooth these days and now I own it in digital format so I can shrink it, grow it, re-color it and print it forever and ever! And just a quick reminder, I am not a user of any program fancier than Microsoft Word for my hybrid projects so it's pretty easy to get the basics from your kit.

For my project, I chose Kelleigh's super cute hexagon box template. A quick download and I was ready to go. I opened the line image of the template in Word and started playing. I first enlarged the template to the very edges of my paper. This causes the template to be a bit too long for an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper but that was ok since I wanted to make some alterations anyway. I wanted to make the top a lipped piece versus one that tucks inside. So I printed the top at full size and then printed the bottom a tiny bit smaller to enable the on and off the top was going to need. I printed off the two sections onto copy paper as well as printing out a full sheet of houndstooth paper. While my printer will accept cardstock, I don't like cut and fold lines printed on my project so I opt to print the template on a seperate sheet, staple it to my printed paper and then cut out the two sheets at the same time. Before I cut out the bottom of the box template, I scored 1/4" score lines vertically on a sheet of SU! shiny cardstock. Then same procedure, staple the template and cut. Kelleigh includes a how to assemble with each template complete with photos to help you along. I scored according to the template and adhered everything together. Here she is! A sweet little box for a very special friend of mine who is getting married in a month. I decided I would fill this box with tiny emergency items that she just might need, just in case, on her big day. This is a great shot of how I chose to finish off my box. I wanted this box to be sturdy enough that she can toss it in with her stuff that day. I decided a few reinforcements were justified and made a simple box liner by cutting, 1/4" scoring and punching a decorative edge along a piece of pink cardstock. The liner was 2" x 12", then edger punched. It's not quite enough to cover all six sides so I cut one more piece to finish of the last section. I also added top edge tabs to the bottom of the box so that instead of cut edges, they are now folded and adhered tabs...again for the reinforcement factor. A close up of the note I wrote inside the box for my friend. This was done in Word again using a text box and adding the bracket and rounded corner box shapes. I printed this over a scrap of the houndstooth I had left over. A couple of notes on the photo below....the "happy day" elements are part of the Happy Land digi Kit and were simply re sized and printed on a scrap of white cardstock through Word. The accordian flower is a 1 " x 11" strip of shiny white cardstock scored at 1/4" and accordian folded. The edges were glittered with antique silver glitter from Martha Stewert. And the lime green vellum....actually white vellum run through the sizzix with the swiss dots embossing folder and then colored on the back side with a lime colored brush pen. Head on over to the cupcake project to see more with colored and dry embossed vellum. Some of the goodies I have inside the box. I shopped the travel aisle for some things, an emergency kit for others and also added an emergency "something blue" for luck :) Again, scraps pf the houndstooth are great for repackaging loose items. A small discussion on the box closure. Again, keeping in mind I wanted this box to be able to survive the rigors of the big day, I opted for a magnet closure flap. If you have ever wondered why Basic Grey sells magnets....when you try them out and hear the "snap" when they find each other, you will know. The one downside is the adhesive...it's no match for the pull of the magnets. Thanks to some crafty techniques shared by my friend Elise, we found that the magnet works best when encased, or taped down when it's out of site. Check out her FABULOUS interactive card with the yummiest clear star clasp that you have ever seen using these magnets {here}. For my clasp, I punched two half inch circles from the scored white paper. I also punched a strip of the houndstooth and pulled out a tiny silver brad and a gem. The gem was tinted with alcohol ink to match. The Basic Grey magnet is sandwiched between circle and houndstooth tab and circle, all glued with Scotch quick dry liquid adhesive. For the lid hinge, I simply adhered a strip of scored white cardstock to the inside back section of the lid to the outside back of the box and made a crease at the fold. And FINALLY, one last shot to show how much class a bit of scoring gives plain cardstock. I love the ridges in the shiny white cardstock. Seems very "boutique" to me.

Oh and don't forget, FINAL chance to leave a comment for my blog candy for 3 gift certificate winners to Kelleigh's store. Check out the post {here}. Don't miss out and good luck!
